Trauma-Informed Communication Training to improve empathy, compassion and patient experience through trauma-aware conversations.
This full day virtual course supports non-clinical staff in general practice to communicate more confidently and compassionately with patients whose behaviour or responses may feel challenging or difficult to understand. It explores how people’s communication is shaped by their life experiences, needs and context, including neurodivergence, trauma and social inequality, and works from the starting point that most people are doing the best they can in the circumstances they are in.
Drawing on trauma-informed principles and contemporary thinking about trauma and adversity – including Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) – participants consider how unseen experiences and deep-seated wounds can influence how people see the world, make choices and interact with services, including decisions that contribute to health inequalities.
The course emphasises empathy and compassion as practical communication skills rather than abstract ideals. Participants learn techniques that help build trust, reduce escalation, improve patient experience and create more inclusive interactions, particularly for people whose behaviour may be shaped by trauma, adversity, neurodivergence or social disadvantage.
Our work is inspired an informed by a great book by Dr Gabor Mate, called The Myth of Normal – definitely one for your read list.
This Trauma-Informed Communication Training programme helps participants understand how trauma and adversity can influence behaviour, communication and healthcare experiences, enabling them to respond with greater confidence, empathy and compassion.
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to communicate more effectively with people whose experiences of trauma and adversity may influence how they engage with healthcare services.
This Trauma-Informed Communication Training programme is typically delivered as a full-day interactive virtual workshop, allowing participants time to explore concepts in depth, reflect on practice and develop practical communication skills.
The programme combines facilitated discussion, self-reflection, case studies, group exercises and workplace examples to help participants understand how trauma and adversity can influence communication and behaviour.
Participants explore trauma-informed principles, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), health inequalities, compassionate communication techniques and practical approaches for creating safer and more supportive patient interactions.
The course encourages reflection on real-life experiences and provides practical strategies that can be applied immediately within healthcare settings.
This programme is designed for non-clinical healthcare professionals who regularly communicate with patients and wish to develop a deeper understanding of how trauma and adversity can influence behaviour, communication and engagement with services.
The course is particularly valuable for staff who support vulnerable individuals, people experiencing health inequalities or those whose behaviour may sometimes appear challenging, distressed or difficult to understand.
It is also beneficial for organisations wishing to strengthen compassionate communication, improve patient experience and embed trauma-informed approaches within everyday practice.
Every patient brings their own experiences, challenges and story into the consultation room or reception area. Some experiences are visible, but many are not. Trauma, neurodivergence, inequality and previous interactions with healthcare can all influence how people communicate, respond and engage with services.
Compassionate, Inclusive and Trauma-Informed Communication helps primary care teams develop the understanding, empathy and communication skills needed to create psychologically safe, respectful and inclusive conversations for every patient.
Trauma-Informed Communication Training helps healthcare teams understand how trauma, adversity and life experiences can influence communication, behaviour and engagement with services.
