Level 1 Health Coaching – Everyday Interactions

Summary

This Level 1 Health Coaching Training course introduces primary care staff to practical health coaching skills that can be used in everyday patient interactions. Participants develop confidence in listening, questioning, empathy and person-centred conversations, helping patients feel heard, understood and supported.

Designed specifically for healthcare professionals working in primary care, the course focuses on building the foundations of a health coaching approach. Learners explore how everyday conversations can support patient engagement, self-management and positive health outcomes, while developing stronger relationships with patients through curiosity, active listening and effective communication.

This introductory programme provides a practical starting point for individuals wishing to develop their health coaching skills and progress to more structured coaching conversations and behaviour change approaches.

Aims

Participants will develop the foundational skills required to use a health coaching approach in everyday patient interactions, including:

  • Listening without agendas
  • Developing empathy and curiosity
  • Building rapport and trust
  • Understanding Personal Models of the World and how perceptions influence conversations
  • Asking insightful questions
  • Using reflection and summarising techniques to support patient understanding and engagement

This introductory programme focuses on the core communication and relationship-building skills that underpin effective health coaching conversations in primary care.

Participants wishing to develop more structured coaching conversations, motivational interviewing approaches and behaviour change techniques can progress to our Level 2 Health Coaching course.

How Long Is The Course?

The course can be delivered as either one full day or two half-day sessions delivered approximately two weeks apart.

The two-session format gives participants the opportunity to practise their health coaching skills in real-world conversations, reflect on their experiences, and discuss the impact of their learning with the trainer. This approach helps embed learning and supports the practical application of health coaching techniques in everyday patient interactions.

Additional Information

Many conversations in primary care are brief, but even short interactions can have a significant impact on how patients feel, engage with services, and manage their health and wellbeing.

This Level 1 Health Coaching Training course introduces participants to the core skills that underpin a health coaching approach. Rather than focusing on giving advice or finding immediate solutions, learners explore how listening with curiosity, building rapport, and asking insightful questions can help create more meaningful and productive conversations with patients.

The programme provides a practical introduction to the communication skills that support effective health coaching. Participants develop confidence in listening without agendas, demonstrating empathy, understanding different perspectives, and using reflection and summarising techniques to improve understanding and engagement.

Throughout the course, learners are encouraged to consider how these skills can be applied in everyday practice. Whether supporting patients at reception, during care coordination activities, through social prescribing conversations, or within clinical interactions, a health coaching approach can help people feel heard, respected and more involved in decisions about their health.

The course is highly interactive and provides opportunities to practise new skills in a supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own communication style and explore practical ways of strengthening relationships with patients through person-centred conversations.

As the foundation programme within our Health Coaching pathway, this course prepares learners for more structured coaching conversations and behaviour change approaches explored within our Level 2 Health Coaching programme.
