Understanding Blood Tests and Results In Primary Care: A Practical Guide for Clinical Staff

Summary

Understanding Blood Tests and Results Training: A practical guide for Clinical  Staff

Our Understanding Blood Tests and Results training course is specifically created for roles such as primary care nurses, ACPs, ANPs and ARRS roles.

Building on our Level 1 course, this half-day, case-based session has been developed for clinical colleagues who regularly review, interpret, and act on blood results in primary care. Through interactive learning and real clinical scenarios, the session builds confidence in interpreting common blood profiles, recognising abnormal patterns, and linking results to long-term condition management, QOF requirements, and medicine safety.

Participants will explore practical approaches to interpreting Full Blood Counts, U&Es, LFTs, lipid and diabetes profiles, thyroid and inflammatory markers — alongside lesser-used investigations such as endocrine, vitamin and coagulation. The workshop also covers best practice in sampling, labelling, and governance, ensuring clinicians can act safely, document effectively, and communicate results clearly to patients and colleagues.

✅ What Our Understanding Blood Tests and Results Training Course for Non-clinical staff covers

  1. Interpret and explain common blood test profiles (FBC, U&Es, LFTs, thyroid, HbA1c, lipids and inflammatory markers)
  2. Recognise abnormal patterns and identify when to repeat, escalate or refer
  3. Understand how blood results link to NHS Health Checks, QOF indicators and medication monitoring
  4. Apply best practice in blood sampling, bottle selection, order of draw and labelling
  5. Communicate and document results safely, ensuring clear action plans and patient safety
