Care Navigation Training is a practical and engaging programme designed to help reception, patient access and care navigation teams develop the confidence, communication skills and knowledge required to support patients effectively within modern primary care services.
Care navigation is about far more than directing patients to the correct service. Effective care navigation requires strong communication skills, professional judgement, active listening and the ability to build rapport quickly whilst gathering the information needed to support safe and appropriate decision-making. This course helps participants develop the skills required to navigate patient conversations confidently and professionally.
The programme explores the complete care navigation process, from opening conversations positively and gathering information effectively through to offering solutions, managing expectations and concluding conversations professionally. Participants learn how to build trust, develop rapport and create positive patient experiences whilst supporting access to the most appropriate services and healthcare professionals.
Delegates develop practical questioning and listening skills that help them understand patient needs, identify relevant information and reduce misunderstandings. The course also explores how communication style, mindset and personal beliefs can influence conversations and patient interactions.
Participants learn techniques for managing common communication challenges, including patients who are anxious, embarrassed, frustrated, reluctant to share information or who speak English as a second language. The programme provides practical strategies that help staff remain professional, supportive and confident when handling a wide variety of patient situations.
Through discussion, practical exercises and workplace scenarios, delegates develop a structured approach to care navigation conversations that improves patient experience, supports effective triage processes and helps ensure patients receive the right support from the right service at the right time. This Care Navigation Training programme provides practical techniques that can be applied immediately within reception, patient access and care navigation roles.
This course forms part of our wider Communication & Patient Experience Training pathway and complements our Managing Difficult Patient Conversations with Resilience, Excellent Customer Care and Speaking to People with English as a Second Language programmes.

This programme is designed for reception, administration, patient access and care navigation staff who regularly communicate with patients and play a key role in helping people access the right services and support.
The course is particularly valuable for staff who are required to gather information from patients, explain triage processes, manage expectations and support access to multidisciplinary teams, community services and wider healthcare pathways.
It is also highly beneficial for organisations introducing or developing care navigation, patient access or triage systems and wishing to ensure staff feel confident, skilled and supported when conducting patient conversations.

Every day, reception teams help patients access the care they need. That requires more than knowing local services or following a navigation process. It requires the confidence to ask appropriate questions, understand why a patient has contacted the practice and explain clearly why a particular clinician or service is the right choice.
Essential Care Navigation Training develops the communication skills, professional curiosity and confidence that enable reception teams to navigate patients safely, consistently and compassionately.
Throughout this Care Navigation Training programme, participants develop the confidence, communication skills and practical techniques needed to support effective patient access, improve patient experience and help ensure patients receive the right support from the right service at the right time.
This course complements our Managing Difficult Patient Conversations with Resilience, Excellent Customer Care, Speaking to People with English as a Second Language and wider Communication & Patient Experience Training programmes.
