Level 2 Health Coaching – Short Coaching Conversations


Summary

This PCI-accredited Level 2 Health Coaching course develops the skills needed to support behaviour change through structured coaching conversations. Designed for healthcare and wellbeing professionals, the programme introduces motivational interviewing approaches, coaching techniques and evidence-based behaviour change models that can be applied within everyday consultations.

Participants learn how to use short coaching conversations to help patients explore motivation, increase confidence and take greater ownership of their health and wellbeing. The course focuses on practical techniques that support self-management, goal setting and sustainable behaviour change, particularly for people living with long-term conditions or experiencing stress-related challenges.

Building on the foundations of Level 1 Health Coaching, this programme provides a structured approach to coaching conversations and prepares learners to support patients in making meaningful and lasting changes to their health.

Aims

Day 1 (can be delivered as two half-days)

  • Building rapport
  • Personal Models of the World – understanding perceptions
  • Asking insightful questions
  • The language of reflection and summarising

Day 2 (can be delivered as two half-days)

  • Using the Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) Matrix to understand patient behaviours
  • Health behavioural triggers
  • Supporting patients to self-manage their behaviours
  • Exploring the wider causes of health behaviours
  • Introduction to goal setting

This programme builds on the foundations of Level 1 Health Coaching and introduces structured coaching approaches that support self-management, motivation and sustainable behaviour change.

How Long Is The Course?

The course is delivered over two full days or four half-day sessions, with learning typically spaced one to two weeks apart.

This approach gives participants the opportunity to practise their coaching skills between sessions, reflect on their experiences, and discuss real-world applications with the trainer and fellow learners. Spacing the learning in this way helps embed behaviour change techniques and supports the practical application of health coaching approaches within everyday consultations.

<p>Many health conversations involve supporting people to make changes that can improve their health and wellbeing. However, providing information and advice alone does not always lead to lasting change. This PCI accredited Level 2 Health Coaching course introduces structured coaching approaches that help healthcare professionals support patients to explore motivation, build confidence and take greater ownership of their health.</p>

<p>Building on the foundations of <a href=”https://www.stridingedgeconsultancy.co.uk/level-1-health-coaching-for-primary-care-staff/”>Level 1 Health Coaching</a>, participants develop practical skills that can be used within short coaching conversations. The programme introduces motivational interviewing approaches, behaviour change concepts and coaching techniques that help patients explore their own reasons for change and identify realistic next steps.</p>

<p>Throughout the course, learners examine the factors that influence health behaviours and consider how different coaching approaches can support self-management. Participants are introduced to the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Matrix and other practical tools that can help patients better understand their behaviours, values and goals.</p>

<p>The programme focuses on real-world application and encourages participants to use coaching techniques within everyday consultations and patient interactions. Whether supporting people living with long-term conditions, promoting healthier lifestyles or helping individuals navigate complex health challenges, the course provides practical skills that can be applied immediately within healthcare settings.</p>

<p>As part of the Health Coaching pathway, this programme bridges the gap between foundational coaching skills and more advanced health and wellbeing coaching approaches.
